FORTIFIED Roof™ Designation
Storm-Resistant Roofing That Qualifies for Insurance Discounts
A FORTIFIED Roof is the foundation-level designation from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). It focuses on what matters most during a storm: keeping your roof attached and preventing water intrusion through a sealed deck system, enhanced nailing patterns, and proper edge protection. The 2025 FORTIFIED standard requires certified roofing contractors and applies stricter requirements to both coastal and inland areas.
What Makes a FORTIFIED Roof Different?
Standard roofs are built to code minimums. FORTIFIED roofs are engineered to exceed those standards with specific construction techniques proven through real-world testing and post-storm investigations.
Sealed Roof Deck
A continuous seal over the entire roof deck prevents water intrusion even if shingles are lost during a storm.
Enhanced Connections
Ring-shank nails in a tighter pattern create stronger connections between the roof covering, deck, and structure.
Edge Protection
Drip edges and starter strips are installed to specific standards to prevent wind from peeling back roofing at vulnerable edges.
Third-Party Verified
Every FORTIFIED designation requires independent inspection and certification—not just a contractor's word.
FORTIFIED Roof Designation
The FORTIFIED Roof designation focuses on what matters most during a storm: keeping your roof attached and preventing water intrusion. Here's exactly what's included.
FORTIFIED Roof
Foundation Level
Core Requirements
Sealed Roof Deck
A continuous seal over the entire roof deck using self-adhering membrane or approved sealant tape. This secondary water barrier prevents water intrusion even if shingles are lost during a storm.
Enhanced Nailing Pattern
Ring-shank nails in a tighter pattern (6-nail for shingles) create stronger connections. The 2025 standard requires this tighter pattern for both coastal AND inland areas.
Drip Edge & Starter Strip Standards
Metal drip edges installed to specific dimensions and fastening patterns prevent wind from peeling back roofing at vulnerable eaves and rakes. Starter strips provide the first line of defense.
Roof-Mounted Vent Protection
All roof vents must meet testing standards showing they prevent wind-driven rain from entering. The 2025 standard tightened this requirement for all FORTIFIED roofs.
Roof-to-Wall Connections
Enhanced connections between the roof structure and wall framing using hurricane clips or straps. This keeps the roof attached to the structure during high winds.
2025 Standard Update
Projects permitted after November 1, 2025 must meet the 2025 FORTIFIED Home Standard. Key changes include: certified FORTIFIED roofing contractors are now required, tighter nailing patterns apply to all regions (not just coastal), and all roof-mounted vents must meet wind-driven rain testing standards. Lapeyre Roofing is trained and certified to the 2025 standard.
Beyond FORTIFIED Roof: Silver & Gold
The FORTIFIED program includes two additional levels that protect the entire building envelope. These require whole-home upgrades beyond roofing.
FORTIFIED Silver
Opening Protection
Adds impact-rated windows, doors, skylights, and reinforced garage doors. Requires coordination with window/door contractors.
Not a roofing-only upgrade—requires whole-home modifications.
FORTIFIED Gold
Complete Envelope
Includes continuous load path to foundation, gable end bracing, soffit protection, and structural connections. Typically requires new construction or major renovation.
Not a roofing-only upgrade—requires structural modifications.
As a roofing company, we specialize in FORTIFIED Roof designations. If you're interested in Silver or Gold certification for a new build or major renovation, we can help coordinate with other trades and the FORTIFIED evaluator.

FORTIFIED Roof FAQ
Answers about FORTIFIED Roof designation, costs, insurance savings, and the 2025 standard updates.
A FORTIFIED Roof is the foundation-level designation from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). The key differences from a standard roof include: a fully sealed roof deck that prevents water intrusion even if shingles are lost, ring-shank nails in a tighter 6-nail pattern for stronger attachment, enhanced drip edges and starter strips to resist wind uplift, protected roof-mounted vents tested against wind-driven rain, and reinforced roof-to-wall connections. These upgrades add 5-15% to a standard roof replacement cost but provide protection rated for 130+ mph winds.
